As a new Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP) member, it is vital that you see your new primary care provider (PCP) for your Initial Health Appointment (IHA) within 120 days of becoming a member. This helps you establish a relationship with your doctor and coordinate your health care needs.
What is included in the IHA?
Your PCP will:
- Get to know your health history and needs.
- Keep your health records.
- Give you the preventive and routine care you need.
- Refer (send) you to a specialist if you need one.
- Arrange for hospital care if you need it.
Routine care includes:
- Check-ups.
- Shots.
- Prescriptions.
- Tests, screenings, and treatments.
- Health education and counseling.
When you call your doctor to schedule your IHA:
- Tell the person you speak with that you are a new GCHP member and need to schedule your first appointment.
- Give your GCHP member ID number.
Tips for your visit:
- Bring your GCHP member ID card, Medi-Cal Benefits ID Card (BIC), and any other health insurance cards to your appointment.
- Be ready to talk to your PCP about any health conditions or concerns you have about your health.
- Bring a list of all the medications you are taking.
- Ask your PCP what medical tests you need.
