Initial Health Appointment (IHA)

As a new Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP) member, it is vital that you see your new primary care provider (PCP) for your Initial Health Appointment (IHA) within 120 days of becoming a member. This helps you establish a relationship with your doctor and coordinate your health care needs.

What is included in the IHA?

Your PCP will:

  • Get to know your health history and needs.
  • Keep your health records.
  • Give you the preventive and routine care you need.
  • Refer (send) you to a specialist if you need one.
  • Arrange for hospital care if you need it.

Routine care includes:

  • Check-ups.
  • Shots.
  • Prescriptions.
  • Tests, screenings, and treatments.
  • Health education and counseling.

When you call your doctor to schedule your IHA:

  • Tell the person you speak with that you are a new GCHP member and need to schedule your first appointment.
  • Give your GCHP member ID number.

Tips for your visit:

  • Bring your GCHP member ID card, Medi-Cal Benefits ID Card (BIC), and any other health insurance cards to your appointment.
  • Be ready to talk to your PCP about any health conditions or concerns you have about your health.
  • Bring a list of all the medications you are taking.
  • Ask your PCP what medical tests you need.
