Transportation Benefits

If you need a ride to or from a medical appointment, Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP) has you covered. One-way or roundtrip rides are available for your next medical visit at no cost to you.

We offer two types of transportation service:

  • Nonemergency medical transportation.
  • Nonmedical transportation.

What Is Nonemergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)?

People who need extra assistance and a specialized vehicle for transport to and from medical appointments use Nonemergency Medical Transportation (NEMT).

NEMT is an ambulance, litter van, wheelchair van or air transport. If you're capable of riding in a standard car, bus or taxi, NEMT is not for you.

You should use NEMT when:

  • You need help from the driver to and from your home due to a physical or mental disability.
  • Your medical appointment is covered by GCHP.
  • You have a written OK from your provider.

Limits of NEMT. NEMT won't be provided if the service is not covered by Medi-Cal. You can find a list of covered services in your GCHP Member Handbook (English and Spanish).

How to schedule an NEMT ride. You must request an NEMT ride through your provider and receive their written consent. They will prescribe the best transportation method for your medical condition.

Once your provider has given written approval for your NEMT request, you can call Ventura Transit Systems (VTS) at 1.855.628.7433 to schedule a ride. If you use a TTY, call 711.

You must call VTS at least two days before your appointment. Be sure to have your member ID ready when you call. For urgent appointments, please call as soon as possible.

What Is Nonmedical Transportation (NMT)?

People who can ride in a car, taxi or bus use Nonmedical Transportation (NMT) to get to their medical appointments. You should use NMT when you don't need to travel in a specialized vehicle.

You can use NMT for Medi-Cal covered services such as:

  • Medical, dental and mental health services.
  • Substance use disorder services.
  • Support group meetings.

Limits of NMT. NMT is only available when you are:

  • Traveling to and from an appointment for a Medi-Cal-covered service.
  • Picking up prescriptions and medical supplies.
  • Unable to get other transportation.

Cost for NMT. Like NEMT, there is also no cost for NMT services. If you get a ride with a friend, GCHP will reimburse for the mileage of the trip — but only if you weren't able to get a ride from VTS.

How to schedule a NMT ride. To schedule a ride, please call VTS at 1.855.628.7433. If you use a TTY, call 711. Call at least two days before you need the ride or as soon as you can. Have your member ID card ready when you call.
